For USPHC's second game of the season the sun was shining at Eggars School on Pushback and remained so until the final whistle. USPHC started strongly in their new 3-5-2 formation and for the second game of the 2026/27 season had replacements available on the bench. This was a vast improvement on the same stage last season when they were only able to field ten players.
Employing a high and effective press, led by the attacking trio of Drake, Green and Ferrett (Mini) USPHC quickly established control and broke the deadlock early on. The breakthrough came courtesy of Anderson whose dynamism up front was rewarded with a well-taken strike which this reporter missed.
The remainder of the first half was delicately balanced. With Mallett providing excellent protection in front of the back three Alton's best route forward was down the flanks. They found some success in wide areas on a couple of occasions but struggled to penetrate the USPHC circle. Stoyles and Jones in goal organised the defensive line superbly, ensuring the visitors' opportunities remained limited.
Alton did eventually flash a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but with no forward available to apply the finishing touch the chance went begging. It was a moment that highlighted the excellent positional discipline and spatial awareness of the USPHC defence.
With fresh legs introduced through Steel and Whiteley USPHC continued to keep Alton at arm's length. Further rotations helped maintain the intensity, and thanks in no small part to several important saves from Jones, the away side went into the break with a deserved 1-0 advantage.
The second half saw USPHC switch to a more flexible back four, with Drake dropping alongside Stoyles to support the original defensive trio. While the press was slightly less aggressive, USPHC's passing out from the back improved considerably despite a pitch on which the ball frequently held up.
The additional control soon paid dividends. Ferrett (Mini) doubled the lead before Drake added a third putting USPHC firmly in command. However, just before the hour mark Alton pulled one back from a short corner following a stop that may or may not have occurred inside the circle.
From that point onwards, the contest began to settle. Alton increasingly resorted to direct, crash-ball hockey aimed at their younger, quicker forwards against USPHC's more measured full-backs. Despite the change in approach it failed to create any significant chances.
Strong running from both the forwards and midfield continued to apply pressure and prevented Alton from building any sustained momentum. USPHC saw the game out professionally and at the final whistle emerged as deserved 3-1 winners.
The result reversed last season's final-day defeat to Alton when Pugh bagged a hat-trick. This time, there would be no such successful repeat for the home side who also saw oner of their own go to A&E with a broken collar bone after an accidental collision with Ferrett (elder). After just two games, both Anderson and Drake have already scored three goals apiece. Anderson, who led the club's scoring charts with 14 goals in 2025/26 looks in similarly sharp form while perhaps the most surprising statistic of all is that Ullett remains without a card, having collected three greens last season.
